Well the mosy quoted quote of Shakespeare. Today i ask myself 'whats in name?' and the answer i receive is 'name is everything'. If you have a long indian name and you settle abroad thats when you realise 'alas my name was shorter and easier to pronoounce' not because you don't like it. You love it coz its the identity that your parents have given you, a brand, the big banner that people recognise you with. But you actually start hating it once you step into a country where people cant spell Asians names correctly and end up killing it BIG time. I met a blonde woman in coimbatore outside my workplace and she was enquiring about the 'Art of Living' class that is supposed to be happening in the next building. Since the security guard didnt know english,i was called for rescue. She wanted to know the name of the person who helped her, me and i was like 'Sreelatha' and she goes like'you mean something like latte coffee'. Ya right i said forget it. But i thanked her that atleast she will try to recollect my name everytime she sips the latte.
Today at my art class here in london i saw that my teacher and my fellow classmates struggle with my name and i told them please call me 'sree' and they were very happy. Thankfully sree was very easy for them to pronounce and yesterday at my french class i saw my french teacher struggle with my name and its not just me she was struggling with most of the names. A beautiful indian name misspelt makes my heart ache and imagine how my parents would feel if they listen. They will be like 'do not live in a country that doesnt identify you correctly'.
I came across something interesting recently which is how to spell ur name in Japanese. Take each letter of your name and substitute it with the japanese sound to the right of the letter. Names might be kinda long.A- ka B- tu C- mi D- te E- ku F- lu G- ji H- ri I- ki J- zu K- me L- ta M- rin N- to O-mo P- no Q- ke R- shi S- ari T-chi U- do V- ru W-mei X- na Y- fu Z- zi. So my name was something like this ' ARISHIKUKUTAKACHIRIKA'. Now dont you think my Indian name is much much easier to pronounce compared to this one.
I hope the english people realise that.
I decided that my children in the near future will have to come abroad either for education or work and i will not let them undergo the same and hence i have decided to give them easy names which the english, french, american etc can pronounce easily. never ever say 'whats in name?'
