Life of a PI

The following are some of my imaginative scenes about the life of iyer family right from school, college, married life to life at the age of 60s. Being a Palakkad iyer myself i drew some indcidents from my life. That's one reason you may find the tamil to be a little Malayalam solaicha tamil just like any PI's tamil.

1. A scene from house where they have kept navarathri kolu 'vango vango okarungo. Edhu onga ponna? nanna paduvala' 'ohh pauvale 5 varuchama pattu kathukara, paiyan mrudhangam kathukaran' 'oh chamathu oru nalla pattu padudima'

2. The following scene at an iyer home early one morning - distant shout from the door 'amma naan schooluku poiyutu varen' and amma's reply from kitchen 'sami namaskaram pannitu poda/podi, gajananum, saraswathi namasthubyam chollu, vibhuthi ituko' and another dialogue following that is 'thair chadamum, poriyalum vachiruken da/di baki vekama chapudutiya' and the son/daughter's reply to that 'vadam vechurikiya'.

3. Like I said above their lunch boxes either have thair chadam or sambar chadam or sometime both, following that the scene at home in the evening will be 'en ma rendu chadam vechel, ennala chapadave mudiyalai' 'chumma iruda/di valarara vayasu nanna chapadanam appo than nanna padipu mandela erum'

4. The son/daughter studying all the time even when they have guests at home and dad telling his guest 'nanna padipan/padipa perishu ayetu peria software professionala varuva/varuvan (instead of doctor/engineera varuvan)

5. Phone call at home 'phone adikaradhuna ISDya irukaporathu fona edungo' 'halo ha appa nan venkatesh San Joselendhu pesharen' ..'venkatesh chollu da anga enna time aradhu' (this will be the first dialogue of most of the dads), 'indha ammata peshu, velai ellam okya poindu iruku illaya' 'ha appa konjam hectica iruku parava illai'. Over to amma 'dai venki epadi da irukai, eppo da varai, seri vela velaiku ennai thechu kulikaraya, nanna chapudu da, timeku thoongu, chumma andha laptopuku mundi muzhichund okaradhe' she goes on and on and never lets her son speak because its long distance and she does not want to waste time. 'onudu latest foto enaku mail pannu da, tamilmatrimony.com la podanum' 'aiyo amma enaku eppo kalyanam venda, india vandhutu pakalam' and then the boy tries to hang up coz now that the marriage topic has come up no more talking with mom' seri ma nalaku pesharen, enaku officuku kalambanam. bye' ......

6. A scene from a marriage ceremony 'naan yaru therinjudho di, chinnadha irundhapo pathathu perisha valandhutiye' the same mami tells her husband 'therinjudha namma Angichiodu ponnu' 'oh Angichioda ponna, enna panarai di ma' 'bankla velai pannaren' ' kalyanathuku pakarala? ammava jathagam kuduka chollu, oru nalla paiyan irukan, USla raja mari irupan' and the girl is so embarressed and by the time her mom comes there and she says 'amma, indha mama-mami ungala ketundu irundha' saying so you take to your feet deciding never to go to iyer weddings ever again.

7. A scene between dad and daughter 'inimelendhu every sunday ne than chamaikanum'..'pongo pa sunday enaku rest day after a hectic week of work from mon-sat'. dad 'kalyana vayasu ayachu enam chamaka theriyalaina enakum unga ammakum vekka kedu, ennodu pattiku 11 vayasulu kalyanam ayachu.' and then the argument continues..

8. Son has come from US on a holiday, mother 'dai endha ponnodu foto paruda evaloda unnodu jathagam chendhuruku, Infosysla velai panara eppo US la iruka, nalla family, padicha kudumbam, alaga iruka'. 'amma idhuku than ne enna USlendhu vara chonaya'...finally the guy agrees and the boy-girl meet and they get married and fly off to US.

9. A scene of 2 Iyer mami's conversation. Both mamis are in the US visitng their sons or daughters 'ungaluku epadi pozudhu poradhu inga, nerame poradhillai, walk kuda poga mudiyalai, roadellam verichodi iruku, epothan india povenu ayiduthu' another mami 'aiyo ammam cholathengo, boruthan adikarathu, ennoda peran cholaradhu onnum puriya matengaradhu, avanuku tamile varadhillai, enodu mattu ponnuta chonnen pathiya idhunala than chonen US venda nu, enodu peranta pesha kuda mudiyalai'

10. Conversation between two iyer married ladies living in the US (they are not allowed to work their due to their visa status). 'hi gayathri enna panarai' 'oh hi umava cleaning than, nee?', 'eppo than mudichen, kulichutu chamayal pannanum, onga athula ennavakum chamayal?' 'nethaiku indian market poirundhom, valakai kadachuthu so moru kootanum, valakai mezukuvaratiyum, unga athula?' 'inga enime than decide pannanum. nethaiku pongal programs pathaya sun tv la' 'oh pathen, full day entertainment than' 'indha friday lalita sahasranamam classuku varuvaya?' 'oh varuven, thursday pattu class eppo' '4 maniku as usual' 'seri appo pakalam. bye' 'bye..happy cleaning'.

Nice one, sheelu.i was actually envisioning the moments you have listed here. You can mention the most important factor in a PI's life-'Molagootal'...I have seen people discussing about 'molagootal' when fixing up marriage alliances..
Good one:)

completely identified... rather unaware of the USA aspects.. but i do agree on that too...

i tried this sometime back... you might just want to take a look... something similar but without tamil :)

i like the morukutaan, molagootal, mazhukuvariti part... secret receipes from the secret society's of PI's...
