HP 6 - My Review

A very much awaited Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is finally out and I must say at least for me the movie was not disappointing. Harry and his friends from Hogwarts are kids no more, they are in their adolescent age having awkward and crazy crushes. On the darker side, this part of the HP series offers the most astounding secrets of Voldemort revealed through Dumbldore's memory viewed through the pensieve by Harry. A new character introduced in this part 6 is professor Slughorn whose memory with Tom Riddle forms the most important plot for the movie.

The movie starts with Harry and Dumbledore's journey to Slughorn's to invite him to teach potions in Hogwarts. Its Harry's first apparition experience and he doesn't seem to be loving it much. Meanwhile a scene shows the millennium bridge in London being destroyed by the death eaters. This scene might just be confusing for those who have not read the book. This part could have been elaborated a bit more to show why that is being done. It is to show that the dark lord now has control on the muggle world (read as non-magic people)too. The movie missed showing a very important character, the new minister at the ministry of magic Rufus Scrimgeour the one who replaces Cornelius Fudge. The director could have introduced him in the movie as he will be seen more in Deathly Hallows. Harry acquires a book of potions belonging to a mysterious Half-blood prince which comes handy in brewing the potions with absolute ease. Thus he becomes the favourite student of Slughorn and wins himself a bottle of Luck potion. This potion when taken will provide the drinker with good luck, straight for one whole hour. This later comes in use to Harry who persuades Slughorn to share that one memory of his that will help him destroy voldemort. The memory of slughorn reveals the most shocking secret of Voldemort, the Horcrux. It is a magical object inside which one can hide his soul so that he becomes immortal. In the memory riddle asks Slughorn how it is created and Slughorn tells riddle that a horcrux is made after a life is being taken. Now Harry and Dumbledore have to destroy these horcruxes to kill Voldemort. Hence they set out on a journey in search of a horcrux that Dumbledore believes is being hidden in a small cave amidst a sea. The director has pictured this particular scene very well. You can totally relate it to the description Rowling gives in the book.
There are some light moments in the movie with Ron's new affair with Lavender Brown and Hermione realising that she has feelings for Ron and Harry realising that he has feelings for Ginny. The weasley twins are as funny as always.
The movie ends with a big loss for Hogwarts and great blow to Harry, the death of Albus Dumbledore. How Harry is going to face his arch enemy Voldemort without the help of his favourite professor will form the plot for the next movie. Of course his 2 best friends Ron and Hermione will not leave his side this time too.
Though the movie has left out the last part of the book, a war between the order, students of hogwarts against the death eaters, it has managed to pack the most important aspects of the book. We don't get to see Voldemort in this movie at all only the childhood character Tom Riddle appears in the movie.
I heard the next movie is being made in 2 parts. It better be because its my favourite and I believe that every page and chapter of that book is very essential and should not be left out. But if your planning to watch the next one i would suggest you read all the seven books of Harry Potter so that you will enjoy the movie as much as I do. Happy reading

Being an ardent fan of movies (all kinds), Harry potter (or LOTR) types have never managed me to grab my attention somehow. Maybe I should have read the books in the first place...
